The Academy Awards, also known as The Oscars is one of the most highly respected award-giving bodies in the world. Actors, producers, writers, set designers, costume designers, and all the people who work in the film industry have dreamed to one day win an Oscar. The Oscars hold such high prestige that people all around the globe know what it means to win this award.

Votation and nominations

Many brilliant movies are excluded from the nomination list. The Academy is known for doing such. Many people were saying that these wonderful films that were excluded were snubbed. It makes us think about how these films were snubbed in the first place.

Like all the other ceremonies, the Academy has an intricate system of selection that is clearly laid out in their 35-page rule book. There are two basic steps of selection. The first step is for the Academy members to vote on all the eligible movies for that year. Only active Academy members can vote. The final list, which is called the Oscar nominees list with be announced by January. The next step is that the Academy members will vote again, this time among the movies that made the nominees list. The movie that gets the most votes wins the award.

As for the nomination, rules are also applied for all the movies that are to be nominated. An Academy member cannot just nominate a movie. The movie should have the specifications to compete. For example, to compete in a feature-length category, the film should be over 40 minutes. The movie must be viewing in cinemas for 7 consecutive days, played 3 times a day, with at least screening between 6 pm to 10 pm.

Becoming an Academy member

The process of votation is tedious. It is also as difficult as when a person is applying for an Academy membership. For a person to be a candidate, he or she must have a minimum of 3 theatrical feature film credits released in the last 5 years. The specifications may change depending on the department.
